Today, with the intense interest in the environment and how impactful each person’s carbon footprint is, many of us are trying to find ways to be more environmentally conscious. We do things like recycle plastics, paper and glass, we find ways to reduce our fossil fuel consumption and even go so far as to ensure we purchase goods that are produced in environmentally friendly ways. With a little research you may actually be surprised at all the green products that exist, including construction materials.

Eco-Friendly Building Materials

You’d think that since the main building materials are wood, nails and concrete that you’re dealing with eco-friendly building materials already. While the wood comes from trees and concrete is essentially sand, limestone or granite, Portland cement which is calcium silicate and nails are either iron or aluminum that all of these items would be environmentally friendly. The drawback comes when you look at how these materials are acquired and processed to become the building materials we need for our homes and businesses.

What It Means To Be Green

As a part of the drying and curing process for wood, many chemicals can be used to speed this up. Because of the sap in wood, it is softer and more pliable than it is when it’s dried meaning that freshly cut wood can’t be used for construction. Nails are, of course, made from iron ore and that has to be processed into usable metals so the nails can be produced. The rock, sand and other materials that makes up concrete all have to be mined. This means that many processes used to produce construction materials are traditionally not environmentally friendly at all.

New technologies and new methods of procuring lumber and concrete materials have significantly reduced the impact on our environment. Other areas that have traditionally had a negative impact on our environment such as insulation production, carpet making and vinyl flooring have had major changes in how these construction materials are made to be more environmentally friendly as well. Even new materials for roofing are less environmentally negative. However, even with all of these improvements, you still have to choose to use these materials when you’re having your home built or updated.

Research Is Key

Do your research when selecting materials for your home. By choosing to use environmentally friendly green construction materials, not only are you getting better quality materials for your home but you’re encouraging the construction industry to continue to make improvements in their materials. You’ll feel better about your home and the environment will continue to improve in quality as well.
