What The Difference Is Between Cable And Satellite TV Packages
By Geoff Morova
It’s all too easy to say “Oh, it doesn’t make any difference. Cable TV and satellite TV is all the same.” From the outside, you’d essentially be right. If you take a look at all the different channels both satellite companies and cable companies have to offer, you’ll find that 90% of all the channels they have are exactly the same. Cable TV packages and satellite TV packages can have HDTV channels in them along with Pay Per View movies and even Video On Demand services. As a matter of fact, cable TV companies and satellite TV companies offer so many of the same things, what difference does it make which you subscribe to?
The Difference Between Deals
Truth be told, it’s those differences that really do make a difference. On the whole, both satellite TV companies and cable companies look the same, but once you pull back the curtain, you’ll find they’re wildly different and those differences not only can give you better deals but can save you a lot of money in the process. One reason is that satellite TV packages offer you a lot more than cable TV packages can.
For instance, satellite TV packages begin as low as $25 per month and if you’re looking at great satellite deals, you can choose between 5 different packages for under $50 per month. Most cable companies only offer a couple. This means you aren’t stuck with limited choices where there are lots of channels you’re paying for that you will never watch. But channel selection is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the major differences between satellite companies and cable companies.
Equipment and Billing Differences
One of the most glaring differences is the fact that cable companies rent you whatever equipment you need to watch their digital TV. This means you’re paying a rental fee every month for the set top boxes and what adds insult to injury is the fact you have to rent the remotes separately. Not only that, but the rental fee for their HD box is more expensive than for a regular one. They even charge extra for HDTV programming. Satellite TV packages give you all the equipment you need including the remotes and there is no extra charge for HD boxes, or for HDTV programming for that matter.
Not only is that the case but cable TV movie packages are all billed as separate items. There is no bundling discount like there is when you subscribe to multiple premium channels like satellite TV packages offer. Satellite companies also offer free installation, free premium channels for a limited time and even free technology upgrades like DVRs and the ability to access your TV and DVR via the internet with TV everywhere.

Whenever ordering through a retailer, like Infinity DISH, for instance, just make sure you're not paying a 'processing fee.' DISH does not require them and you can either find a retailer who does not charge them or negotiate your way out of it. They are usually billed at $49.99. Just a tip to all the consumers out there.
