Wireless Public Networks – Is Your Information Safe?
By Geoff Morova
Information, when used properly, can be very beneficial to humanity. On the other hand, when used otherwise, information can disrupt personal and public lives. In this age where information can easily be accessed and uploaded to the World Wide Web, it is imperative for every user to be responsible with information security when using the Internet.
The Internet Is Everywhere
In connection with the above, the use of wireless public networks compared to private connections has increased. This is due to the fact that some public places have been turned to a free Internet connection for the benefits of the public. Also, more and more establishments install free internet service in order to entice consumers to buy their products. On the other hand, there are people who maximize this kind of condition by making money on this information.
Be Aware
For this reason, awareness can be a tool to stop the use of information for personal gains. Aside from being aware, there are step and tips, sometimes referred to as rules that can be used to ensure the security of using a wireless public networks as well as to keep information safe. The first rule is never save your login information on the internet. Always make sure to log out especially from social networking sites and webmail accounts where personal and business transaction takes place. You also have to disable the automatic login option so that no one will use except you.
Clean Up After Yourself
Rule number two is to erase your search and internet use history so that no one will have an idea on what kind of website you are accessing. There is a lot of software that can perform this task. All you have to do is search it over the internet, download the software of your choice and install it in your computer. Most programs have terms and conditions that clearly discussed the kind of service they offer. Always read it.
When You're Done, Close Up
Rule number three involves presence of mind. Always remember to close any window or website you have accessed. Since it is a public place, a lot of people could get the information they need out from your monitor. In relation to this is rule number four. Since you are using an internet café or any public computer, always check the place around you before entering username and passwords as there are people who can get your information by simply watching you enter your information.
Easy To Do, Important To Do
The last rule is to never enter sensitive information in public places and public computers. Information such as your credit number, contact details and address could be use for personal gain. These rules can be done simply without any help and without using complex programs. However, there are cases in which expert hackers can still access your information although you have followed all the rules that were mentioned earlier. In this case, just remember to never give any sensitive information over the internet and your information will still be safe.
